Wartime activity at the site involved the construction of wing sections for Vickers Wellington bombers and experimental work on the British version of the V2 rocket. The building is predominantly a steel structure with brick walls and clad with an asbestos sheet roof. Many of the wartime out-buildings, the generator room, oil stores and the canteen have long been demolished but some of the bomb shelters still exist at the rear. The Building stands in approximately five acres of land in a rural setting and provides an opportunity to exhibit some of the roadside furniture owned by the trust. Following abandonment of use by Vickers, the building was used on a variety of temporary leases between 1958 and 1972 when negotiations were satisfactorily concluded for the purchase of the building and permission obtained for use as a private bus museum. |
