Ipswich Corporation Transport has an interesting history which has been well documented. From 1903, the transport undertaking relied solely on forms of electric traction until it purchased its first batch of motor buses in 1950 - these being six AEC Regent IIIs with Park Royal bodies. From this time, motor bus operation in the town gradually expanded with the purchase of more AEC single and double deck vehicles as the trolleybus replacement programme progressed. This vehicle, No 16 in the fleet, was delivered on 28 April 1954 and ran a total of 649,000 miles in service before being withdrawn in 1973.
Being a relatively late unit in the production run of Regent III chassis, it possesses a number of mechanical features, which are compatible with the later Regent V, a type which was also purchased in substantial numbers by Ipswich. No 16 has maintained a close connection with the town and its original operator, and after a lengthy period of restoration, at Cobham, it returned to Constantine Road Depot, in Ipswich, for its repaint in the company's colours in 1990.
This vehicle is privately owned.
