Leyland Comet - Scarlet Pimpernel
Leyland Comet
Date:1949
Registration:MYA 590
Acquired by Museum:-
Current State:Fully restored, currently being repainted
This vehicle was delivered new to Scarlet Pimpernel Coaches of Minehead for sightseeing tours around Devon and Somerset. Originally fitted with a petrol engine, the 5 speed gearbox coupled to it made it ideal for the Exmoor hills of Porlock and Countisbury. In 1966, the vehicle was sold to a local operator for use on school contract work and the original petrol engine was replaced by a diesel engine, which proved more economical. Within a couple of years, the vehicle was sold to another local operator and by 1969 it had moved to the West of England Transport Museum at Winkleigh in North Devon for preservation.

The 'dorsal fin' body styling was peculiar to Harrington, which essentially provided head-room at the rear of the central gangway. Purchased by its current owners in 1971, it arrived at the Cobham Bus Museum in August 1972.

The vehicle appeared in a drama, featuring Agatha Chrisites Miss Marple, and was painted into a livery of blue and cream. The original red livery is currently being restored.

This vehicle is privately owned.
